Jeannie’s Book Club Book Study for Second Semester, 2024: Habits of the Household: Practicing the Story of God in Everyday Family Rhythms

I love how the Lord works! I narrowed the selection down to five books that I had either thoroughly read, or I had partially read, while also reading comments and reviews. I also asked for others’ input. I just wasn’t sure. Then, as I was sorting through some books that I had read and had stored in another room, I came across it! It was one I had read this past summer, and one of which I had forgotten; yet, I had loved its message.

However, I was trying to get a female author this time. As I was emailing my daughter this past week and discussing with her an aspect of her and her husband’s child-rearing, she stated that she had gotten the idea from the book Habits of the Household by Justin Earley. So, it seemed like that was the confirmation I needed. Adding to my surprise was a trusted voice recommending the book - Andy Crouch. Good company, right?

I hope you’ll join our second semester book club beginning January 24, 9:00-10:00 a.m. in room 423, same location as last semester. While I’m not one to make new year’s resolutions, I do believe that reflecting on the past with a prayerful eye toward the future is a good practice. Additionally, with the leading of the Holy Spirit, there is always one or two spiritual practices that we can tweak or implement in our homes. Habits of the Household speaks to that very thing – incorporating within everyday rhythms and routines new practices around those mundane moments of parenting. Here’s the KEY: those moments can become spiritually meaningful, and Earley is going to give us examples as to how. It’s not a checklist of A + B = C in terms of outcomes, but it does show how living the gospel in the context of family-life can bring value to our daily tasks and eternal purpose throughout our days. Children learn best through repetition, and this book incorporates ideas beautifully toward that end. I do hope you’ll join us!
