The Star That Pointed the Wise Men to Baby Jesus
I love technology that allows me to have a video conversation with my grandchildren in Burundi, Africa. Recently, five-year-old Mark told me the Christmas story using eight of the twelve ornaments (which are called “adornaments”), that are hanging on his family’s tree. Each ornament depicts one name for Jesus. He quickly responded that he had four ornaments remaining and explained the systematic way he and his siblings took turns reading about each name, its biblical reference, and its tie-in with the Christmas story. This was a gift I had given them some years ago, so I was delighted to see that they were enjoying it.
Imagine his surprise when I turned my phone around to show him my little “adornament tree” with those same ornaments on it. It is a small table-top tree with tiny lights, and it’s decorated with those same twelve adornament-ornaments. I showed him each one, and as I did, he narrated the correct name for Jesus, except for one. He called the Vine - grapes, one of his favorite foods. I had to laugh! I know one day he’ll understand the symbolism of the Vine in John 15:5.
And then came the respectful correction of one ornament. I had neglected to hang the star ABOVE the baby Jesus ornament. He knew that the star shone above baby Jesus to guide the Magi to Bethlehem. In his mind the star was an important part of the Christmas story, AND equally important was its location on my tree. (I love how literal children are!). So, with one hand holding my phone and one hand on the star, I relocated the star above the baby Jesus ornament. He was happy!
Having heard the Christmas story many times, I would imagine the part about the Magi and the star (didn’t need map quest!) must have captured his curiosity, and he wanted my tree to reflect the accuracy of the story. Just as the location of the star in the East captivated him, may the story of Christmas captivate us as we ponder our Father’s magnificent love. This Love became incarnate in the Gift of eternal life Whose birth we celebrate at Christmastime (1 John 5:11). And just as the Magi traveled in search for the Christ child, may we be mindful that wise men (and women) still seek Him, and in your seeking, I hope He has found a home in your heart.
May your Christmas be filled with the joy of knowing Jesus! Mine will be!
