Scripture Memory- Some Ideas

My husband and I are taking a class via zoom entitled Sonship, which our daughter recommended. It is designed by the founder of their missionary organization, Serge. Part of the requirement for each of the 12 classes is Scripture memory and while challenging, it has been a blessing for my head and heart. A discipline that served me well through years of teaching in Christ-centered schools was memorizing Scripture right along with my students. After practicing it all week with them and listening to them, one by one, recite it, it just naturally sunk into my brain with little effort on my part. Now, it takes hard work and I confess, I am not as consistent as I desire to be.

At Redeemer Day School memorizing Scripture is one of the foundational tenets. Children at this age are little sponges and can memorize verse upon verse. I want to encourage you to capture available moments to jot down some of your favorite Scriptures on 3x5 cards and teach those to your children. As you do, you will also be the beneficiary! Time spent in the car can be redeemed!

Here is another idea besides jotting down verses on 3x5 cards: Several years ago, my daughter asked me to purchase a set of memory verses for each of her two girls. Hearing them recite God’s Word delighted my heart and no doubt, Jesus’s heart, too! When they were in the states for home assignment, they drove 20 minutes to their Baptist Preschool in Greenville, and my daughter chose to use that time wisely. Hmmm…a beautiful thing! This resource may be obtained at
https://www.truth78.org/foundation-verses-resources. These flip cards are designed to give toddlers and preschoolers (ages 2-5) a foundation of Biblical truth and available in ESV or NIV. An update: she says they still use those almost every day, but no longer on car rides. They walk everywhere. There are many benefits of memorizing Scripture. (If you are like me, I get hooked when I know the ‘why’ behind something, especially when the ‘why’ is from Scripture). Here are just a few of the ‘whys’:

  •  It can bring salvation to our children (2 Timothy 3:15).

  •  It will help us renew our minds and fight the temptation to conform to the world (Ro. 12:2).

  •  It will enable us to align our thoughts with what God says, (2 Corinthians 10:5).

  •  It will give the Holy Spirit words to bring to our remembrance as He teaches us (John 14:26).

I am sure you can produce more, but this is a start!

You work diligently as you plan and serve nourishing food to your family, right? I would venture to say that many of you shop the organic aisles and plan menus according to what the experts say is a healthy diet. Likewise, is it not even more important to nourish the mind as well as the body? Let us feast on God’s Word and not on the ‘junk food’ that is so readily available through media and our phones. Are you in?
I am!
